Frequently Asked Questions
Where does the name "Pearls of Africa" come
from?
In 1908 a young Winston Churchill wrote in his My African Journey,
that Uganda was "truly the pearl of Africa". The beautiful scenery,
climate and the warm and friendly people are what drove Sir Churchill
to make the statement. Surely this has not changed! We believe
that there are more pearls of Africa - the men, women and children
living with disabilities, who are living their lives with dignity
and courage, despite the obstacles put in their paths - these
are the true Pearls of Africa!
Where is POA located?
Pearls of Africa, Inc. is based in Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA.
Our sister organization, People
With Disabilities Uganda, is headquartered in Kampala, Uganda.
How can I support POA?
Pearls of Africa believes strongly in the power of the internet
to connect us all. For this reason, there are several ways to
support POA via the internet. Donations of various kinds can be
made online . POA also benefits greatly
from the support and expertise of our online volunteers. We also
have various advocacy plans in place that you can participate
in. Of course, there are more traditional ways of supporting POA
as well. Please check our Get Involved
page for more information.
How does one volunteer online?
Volunteering online is not necessarily a new concept. But it
is one that we believe will revolutionize the way nonprofit organizations
operate and involve people from around the world. There are many
ways to volunteer online, from translating to consulting, research,
to web development. One doesn't have to be a "techie" to volunteer
online - usually all it takes is an email address and a willingness
to help. Find
out more about Pearls of Africa's online volunteering program
and opportunities.
