Dorothy
Mother
of a child with a disability
As
a mother of six, Dorothy’s days are filled with caring for
her family and her household. On the whole, her life was fairly
typical for a Ugandan woman. However a few years ago, all of that
changed, when she gave birth to a baby girl with a disability.
Dorothy’s
husband, believing the misconceptions regarding disability that
are prevalent in Uganda, became fearful and angry. So he left.
Dorothy found herself alone and the sole provider for her family.
As the parent
of a child with a disability, Dorothy found she had no support
whatsoever. She lost many of her friends, and was shunned by the
community. She did not know how to care for her special needs
daughter, and feared that she would not be able to support her
family on her own. As she struggled, she found that she spent
all of her time caring for her able bodied children, and neglected
her special needs child. She knew it shouldn’t be that way,
but she didn’t know what to do.
She
then found the programs put on by People With Disabilities Uganda,
and supported by Pearls of Africa. The Parent Workshop Series
has given her valuable information on caring for her youngest
daughter, and maintaining the wellbeing of her other children.
Dorothy has learned nutritional information, therapy activities
and development benchmarks that have helped her provide for her
special needs daughter, as well as her other children. Most importantly,
however, Dorothy has found a place where she can receive the support
she needs to care for her family. She has found friends in other
parents of special needs children. And she has gained confidence
that she can and will care for all of her children as they grow
into independent and healthy adults
